When David Met Justin

Nobody knew what this show was going to be like, not even the performers themselves. It was unscripted, unrehearsed and utterly hilarious.

The premise was that David Hoyle (formerly The Divine David) and Justin Bond would meet for the first time for a Desert Island Discs type discussion about their favourite songs. Of course, it was always going to be more than that.

David led the proceedings and opened by telling us he's spent the last 6 years rocking backwards and forwards and talking to the same strip of wallpaper. "If it had talked back, I'd still be there".

Annoyingly, his accent kept reminding me of Alan Partridge (ah-ha!). He delivers his lines with the same faux seriousness, but he's wittier than Steve Coogan could ever be.

Justin appeared wearing a glittery snood, very diva. He danced around to the songs and punctuated his conversation with sips from an enormous red goblet.

I came to the conclusion a while ago that the sign of great comedy is when you can't remember a word of it the next day. So far I can only remember two quotes:

David on Kylie: "What has she ever really done or contributed apart from getting cancer?"

Justin on suicide: "If you spent all your time worrying about all the people who'd killed themselves because of something you'd done, then you'd never do anything!"

Oh, and they praised Shirley Bassey for once going on stage, even though one of her kids had just died.
